Bowker Plans to Introduce Non-Fiction Connection

Bowker, the world’s leading provider of bibliographic information, today announced the development of Non-Fiction Connection, the industry’s first comprehensive readers’ advisory tool for non-fiction titles.The new electronic offering will allow users to find non-fiction titles based on books they have already read. Users will simply log on to the subscription-only service, enter the title of a book they already know they enjoy, and search for similar books from Bowker’s non-fiction database. Using the browse feature, users will also be able to locate books within various narrative non-fiction genres, such as true crime, travel, history, food, animals, politics and biographies.

Microsoft Live Names GlobalBooksInPrint.com Database of Record

Bowker, the global leader in bibliographic information management, today announced that its GlobalBooksInPrint.com database has been selected by Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) to provide the basic and value-added data that will enhance descriptions of books incorporated in the new Live Search Books search service from Microsoft.Live Search Books, which was released in beta form by Microsoft in December, is part of an ambitious project by Microsoft to scan millions of books and index them for online searching. The search engine allows users to search the full-texts of scanned books and is currently restricted to out-of-copyright books scanned from the collections of leading libraries such as The British Library, the University of California and the University of Toronto. In a later release, Microsoft will also add copyright works that publishers have given permission to include in the project.

Bowker’s Fiction Connection was recognized for “an innovative search interface with a graphical tagging-like screen for which librarians can’t seem to get enough.”
